Jien and I would occasionally disagree when it comes to a dish or restaurant, and Restaurant Twelve Road in Sungai Way happen to be one of them. We visited the place twice, first for lunch and later on, dinner with my in-laws.
Twelve Road has an unassuming facade – I didn’t even notice the restaurant when we drove past several times until Jien pointed it out. The interior is basic, with two separate dining sections and several private rooms for (I presume) their regular customers.

Cosy interior
Food is above average overall, but only the steamed kampung chicken stood for me. This dish requires one day pre-order notice, so I suggest you inform them when you book your table. Twelve Road offers a range of fish options from braised, stewed, deep-fried or steamed and you get to pick a fish depending on your budget.

Steamed Patin with Soy Sauce
We opted for the Steamed Patin with Soy Sauce (RM9 per 100gm) which was cooked just right. I like the soy sauce seasoning at Twelve Road compared to Leong Ya because the former is bolder and has a stronger scallion oil flavour.
What irks me about the service at Twelve Road is that they don’t listen to instructions or request. I’m not sure if it’s because they put more focus on their regular customer and private room customers, or if they are simply ignorant but our request for large portions were disregarded.

Braised Homemade Beancurd with Mashed Pumpkin
The Braised Homemade Beancurd with Mashed Pumpkin (RM16 – small, RM25 – large) was supposed to be a large portion order, but it arrived small. I asked them to rectify but they refused, saying “it’s enough for your table”. It wasn’t enough for 4 adults and 2 kids, because the beancurd pieces were small.

Taste-wise, the homemade beancurd was soft yet firm to the touch, but the gravy was flat tasting – mostly sweet from the pumpkin but no depth beyond that. My in-laws seem to enjoy it but our little girls and I didn’t. We’re more accustomed to the version from Xfrens.

Yam Ring Gong Bo Chicken
The Yam Ring Gong Bo Chicken (RM30 – small, RM60 – large) contained more spring onions and ginger slices than chicken. I liked that the yam ring was light and fluffy inside, and it’s fried nicely. One of the better ones around, I reckon. Pity their chicken portion was scant.

Robust flavours
Mixed Vegetable Curry in Claypot (RM26 – small, RM52 – large) was quite decent – they were generous with the spices and belacan so flavours were robust. Jien and my MIL enjoyed this, but my FIL and I prefer it more lemak.

Stir-fried Kangkong with Shrimp Paste – (spot the bits of pork lard!)
The Stir-fried Kangkong with Shrimp Paste (RM16 – small, RM24 – large) comes with a generous amount of pork lard so you get plenty of umami from there. This went well with white rice, I have to say.

Saucy and delicious
Since it was my FIL’s birthday, we ordered two portions of Signature Fried Wantan Noodle (RM11 per pax) for longevity. This was pretty good as the noodles were toothsome and braised in a savoury gravy with shitake mushrooms, carrots, cabbage and beansprouts.

Steamed Kampung Chicken (half) which we ordered during our first visit. My favourite thing at Restaurant Twelve Road

Stir-fried mixed vegetables
Prices are reasonable during non-festive period as our bill for dinner with 6 dishes came up to RM220. When we went for lunch during CNY period and ordered from their “CNY ala carte” menu, it was RM150 for 3 small dishes (steamed chicken, marmite pork and mixed vegetables).

Food: 6.5/10 (non-halal)
Verdict: Decent food overall, but I like the steamed kampung chicken best. Make sure you call them ahead to pre-order the chicken.
