Woo Ng Kee, Kepong

Jien and I have been exploring Chinese restaurants of late – because we prefer mixing up our options rather than sticking to the same place over and over again. Woo Ng Kee in Kepong came highly recommended so we decided to give it a try with our little ones and in-laws in tow.

Fuss-free interior at Woo Ng Kee

Woo Ng Kee is often crowded so it’s best to call ahead to book a table or get there early. We called ahead just to make sure a table is available since it’s quite a distance from Bangsar. Even before noon, regulars are already tucking into their food – most of them were having the roast duck and braised pork.

We ordered the fish curry (RM53), half a Pei Pa duck (RM34), braised pork leg (RM23), fried kailan (RM16), salted egg yolk squid (RM30) and crab meatball (RM15) to share. They are also known for their steamed fish as a few tables comprising large groups ordered that.

Crab meatball

I was really looking forward to the crab meatball since it’s a classic dish that is rare to come by these days. Sadly, the one at Woo Ng Kee failed to impress. The filling was dry and coarse so there wasn’t a nice bite or texture inside. A far cry from what’s served here.

Half a pei pa duck

The Pei Pa duck requires pre-ordering during peak times I was told, since it’s one of their best-sellers. Taste-wise, I would prefer the skin to be crispier and the meat to be less gamey, but my in-laws seem to enjoy this so I reckon it boils down to preference.

Creamy, rich curry

The fish curry errs towards the richer, creamier side so if you like your curries super “lemak”, you’ll enjoy this. Personally, I like a stronger, more robust fish curry but this one is quite enjoyable. The fish head was fried well prior to being added into the curry so thumbs up there.

Salted egg yolk squid

Braised pork leg

Jien and I didn’t really like the salted egg yolk squid as the egg coating was paste-y, so the overall dish was oily. It would have been much tastier has the squid been crispy. The braised pork leg was quite good – thick, caramelised sauce with a good balance of savoury, sweet and a bit of kick from the ginger slices. I wouldn’t mind having this again.

Fried kailan with garlic

Overall, I find the food at Woo Ng Kee decent but prices are reasonable. We paid RM179 for all the above including 4 bowls of rice. I wouldn’t mind coming back for the pei pa duck, pork leg and to try their steamed fish next.
